Why does gout flare up?

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis involving urate crystals in and around joints. Flares can bring sudden pain, swelling, and warmth; food is only one part of the picture.

What can a flare feel like?

A joint may become very painful, hot, swollen, or red. The big toe is common, but other joints can be affected. A clinician should assess a first episode or uncertain symptoms.

When should I seek medical care?

Seek urgent medical advice for sudden joint pain and swelling with fever, chills, or feeling unwell. A joint infection can look like gout. Do not assume these symptoms are a flare. Contact your local urgent-care service.

What can I bring to an appointment?

Note when symptoms started, the joint affected, medicines taken, and how symptoms changed. Do not change prescribed medication based on an app result.
